Is strength reflected in physical pain? Can beauty be found in scars? How do trained professionals show compassion? Photographer Michelle Del Guercio answers these questions and more with the images posted on her medical photography [2] site.

Categories include instruments & equipment [3], plastic surgery, [4] surgery, [5] medical professionals, [6] patients & pediatrics, [7] and a documentary series [8] that shows the attempts to save a young girl’s leg.

Del Guercio’s photographs, shot at New York City area hospitals and clinics in the 1990s, showcase her ability [9] to “chronicle the two sides of health care: the highly clinical perspective from the health care professional’s point of view, and the emotional journey experienced by patients and their families and friends.”
