I think you need to really consider eliminating a minor when pursuing visual communications degree and let your minor be an emphasis in one of the visual mediums.

I think you can easily address adding multimedia classes for the 18 hours of the minor slot at the moment.

Focusing in on knowing how to gather enough visuals, audio and how to put these into a sequence as to tell a story will be constant. We were doing multiple slide projectors with movie film long ago. The only thing really new is the equipment to produce these packages in general is more affordable and easier to operate.

You should have classes in lighting which use hot lights and flashes. You need classes in audio. You need classes for visual gathering like video and still. You need classes to help in packaging these materials with software.

I think there needs to be an emphasis on how to collaborate and then also an understanding the 1 person will be required to do a little of all this in many places they will work. The students should graduate understanding how well something can be produced with a team and how a project changes when 1 person must wear multiple hats.

My technical job description now is "Multimedia Specialist". I design and update web pages, I troubleshoot people's issues with the laptops and projectors we check out for presentations, I take photos of events, I supervise commercials, I do some graphic design and some flash animation. It's eight jobs rolled into one, really, and that seems to be the direction this field is headed.

With increased layoffs and businesses trying to save a few bucks, less people are doing the same work. Our department used to have 20 people in it, and now it has 5.

I think that, particularly for an undergraduate program, wide is the way to go. My degree is actually in Graphic Design, but I learned web design, animation, video, photography, and studio arts while I was there as well.
