New Tool May Revolutionize Web Photo Search

A Swedish startup, Polar Rose, plans to revolutionize image searches on the Web with new facial recognition technology. As Graham Charlton reports:

Currently, web image searches can only search the text which accompanies the picture, so your search is only as accurate as the tags which have been applied to the picture. Polar Rose aims to solve the problem by improving tagging, but, more importantly, by analysing the images themselves, and automatically recognising the subject … Polar Rose’s technology will be offered as a free web browser plug-in and through royalty-free APIs for partners, including photo sharing sites.

Polar Rose is expected to enter beta in early 2007.
