Corbis CEO Gary Shenk [pictured] has pledged to make the company profitable by focusing on stock and rights services -- which is why Corbis is positioning itself as a partner that can take the logistics-related pressure off advertising creatives who use rare or celebrity footage. Corbis has announced the completion of several rights-clearance projects for BBDO New York, Publicis and DDB Canada. The three ad agencies have produced TV commercials for General Electric, Bounty and BC Hydro using Corbis footage and personality-clearance services.

Photographers have been manipulating images ever since Abraham Lincoln's head was attached to John C. Calhoun's body in one of Lincoln's most famous portraits. But today, digital technology has made tampering easier and more pervasive than ever. Some believe the trend threatens the public's fundamental faith in the practice of photojournalism.
In this context, Dr. Hany Farid should be a hero to photojournalists and lovers of photojournalism. Farid, who runs the Image Science Group at Dartmouth College, has emerged as a leading authority on digital forensics. His team has developed some of the most advanced software currently available to detect photo manipulation.
While media organizations -- increasingly rocked by photo-doctoring scandals -- have not yet invested in Farid's technology, it seems only a matter of time before this occurs. Here's our Q&A with Farid:

Last month, startup ScanCafe officially introduced its photo scanning and restoration service to the world, followed this week by ProZone, its higher-end service aimed at professional photographers.
Search for ScanCafe on Google, however, and one of the first things you'll come across is a vicious flame war between ScanCafe and a competitor, DigMyPics.com. It's as juicy as any exchange between Rosie O'Donnell and Elisabeth Hasselbeck on The View.

Nielsen//NetRatings, a global leader in Internet media and market research, recently announced a new system for ranking Web traffic called "Total Minutes." This move could open tremendous opportunities for short-form videos.
Until recently, advertisers used page views as the primary measure in determining where to place their ads. Now, Nielsen has decided to add the amount of time a viewer spends on a site to its measurements. This will result in site developers looking for ways to encourage consumers to stay longer on their sites. And one of the key ways to do this will be to offer more information as short videos rather than as text.

In April, Corbis announced that Gary Shenk, company president, would become the new CEO effective July 1, 2007, and that all Corbis officers would begin reporting to him as of the date of the April announcement. Steve Davis, the current CEO, is transitioning out of his day-to-day operational role to pursue new leadership opportunities in the public service and philanthropic world, but he will also continue to serve as a senior advisor to the company.
Recently, Mr. Shenk took time out of his busy schedule to answer a few questions for Selling Stock. He shared some of his thoughts on where Corbis and the industry are headed.
JP: If photographers want their images seen by customers, it has become more and more important to get the images on a major portal. Currently there seem to be four ways to do this:
