its just a constant searching process, i dont think any specific idea outlines the best way, just need to adapt and use the resources you have available to you

thanks for the info. I am trying to get established, have a basic website,(looking to improve it),did first wedding etc. Am searching and searching for "how to" market myself. Obviously not on a par with the "pros" but I will get there! I feel I'm learning and your info convinces me of what I have felt all along--sell yourself and your style personally. Get face to face with your prospective clients---Bottom line. thanks, appreciate the help without all the e fluff.

Just goes to prove that the work does not come to the photographer. The photographer must constantly sell him/her self. Never fear, if a photographer he will find it.

Thanks for sharing, Scott. Another tactic I found very effective is identifying a couple of charities that are close to your heart and doing pro-bono work for them. The three I do this for are rewarding me with prime exposure, access to their member list for specific blasts and above all - the good feeling of contributing to a noble cause. Highly recommended.

This is interesting.

In my case, most of my corporate clients find me through googling. I ask them what keyword they used, and keep adding those keywords to my pages, meta tags, etc. The danger of this practice is that I keep getting same kind of work from same area, where I might want to get different types of work as well.

Great article, Scott. If I could give a little plug here... I'm building a company to solve this very problem: TheNPG.com. This came after working as a photographer and having clients find me on a whim when they were really in need of a decent photographer fast. There is a lot riding on the decision of what photographer will be right for the job, so taking chances of hiring just any photographer, especially in a city where you have no references, can be risky.

I always ask people where they find me but often they don't remember. The most common answer that I receive is, 1. "someone recommended you" and second "I saw your website". ha ha since I have 3 websites for each type of work I do I am sometimes still mystified!
