He is the author of eight travel books and many articles for publications such as Photo District News, Outdoor Photographer, and Hemispheres. Stanley Leary is a Black Star photographer who has been telling stories for more than 20 years as a photojournalist. His work has appeared in Newsweek, Business Week, Sports Illustrated, Wired, Chicago Tribune, NY Times, World Book Encyclopedia, Information Week, Popular Mechanics, Technology Review, Atlanta Journal and Constitution, and many other publications.
Heather S. Hughes grew up in Ohio and graduated from Ohio University with a Bachelor's in Science in Visual Communications in 2000. She has worked for a number of newspapers and publications including the St. Petersburg Times, America 24/7, Virginia 24/7, Time magazine and currently the Daily Press in Newport News, Virginia. Sean Cayton and his wife and business partner Cathy own and operate a wedding photography business in Colorado Springs. Since starting their business in 2001, they have photographed over a 150 weddings. Sean and Cathy chronicle their lives and their business on their blog. Michael Coyne has worked on assignments and appeared in magazines such as Newsweek, Life, Time, National Geographic and the Smithsonian. His numerous awards include: American National Press Photographers Association, Overseas Press Club of America, New York Art Directors Award, Book of the Year, Children’s Book of the Year, The Religious Book of the Year. In April 2003 Michael was awarded the "Centenary Medal" by the Australian Government for Service to Photography. His corporate clients include Pepsi, Exxon, McDonalds, Citibank, General Motors and IBM. Michael has been contracted to Black Star for two decades.
Scott Baradell edits and contributes to Black Star Rising. A former newspaper journalist and executive for Belo Corp., Scott is an accomplished brand strategist who leads the Idea Grove agency. He writes the Media Orchard blog and manages the Spin Thicket and Dirt 100 Web sites. He has nearly two decades of experience working closely with professional photographers, both as a journalist and as a corporate photography buyer.
Darryl Ohrt is the founder of Plaid, a design and branding firm, and chief contributor to BrandFlakesForBreakfast.com. His stint in a punk rock band began Darryl's lifelong pursuit in questioning why things are done, how they can be done better and a burning desire to create work that stands out from the crowd. Plaid has produced award-winning, breakthrough work for clients whose names you'll recognize and some cool brands you haven't heard about, yet. Right now, Darryl is probably buried knee-deep somewhere in the intertubes of the Internet. Says Ohrt: "My agency's work tells my story better than any bio ever could."
John Harrington has been a Black Star photographer for nearly 17 years, traveling throughout Cuba, Mexico, and Eastern Europe. Closer to home, he's covered Washington's many historical events, from inaugurations to state funerals. He was commissioned to produce photography to illustrate three books for the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of the American Indian. In addition, John is the author of Best Business Practices for Photographers, now in its third printing.
Benjamin J. Chapnick is president of Black Star. The Chapnick family has guided the 71-year-old agency since 1963, expanding the company's services from photojournalism to corporate assignment photography, stock photography and beyond. Ben began his career with the agency in 1960 in editorial and corporate sales, and was elevated to executive vice president in 1964. He assumed leadership of Black Star in 1989.
John Chapnick is executive vice president of Black Star. Among the agency's distinctions during John's tenure, Black Star has captured more photographic images for more corporate annual reports than any other photo agency or service in the world.
Anh D. Stack is editorial director of Black Star. She joined the agency as a researcher in the late 1970s and has served as an assignment editor and in sales roles. She works closely with award-winning Black Star photographers on projects ranging from magazine assignments and books to contests. For the past decade, she has represented Black Star at Visa Pour L’images, the annual photojournalism festival in Perpignan, France.
Mike Sheil has "lived in the U.K. and various airport lounges" all his life. He is an accomplished photojournalist specializing in reportage and shooting for annual reports, corporate brochures, and editorial and travel magazines. Mike won the World Press Photo Award in 2002. He began working with Black Star in 1972, and claims his current motto is: "Old photographers never die, they merely go out of focus."
Ron Rovtar has spent much of his life looking through the camera's viewfinder. After graduating from the University of Cincinnati in 1972 with a degree in philosophy, Rovtar became a journalist for 10 years working at several Ohio daily newspapers as a writer, photographer and editor. Rovtar became a full-time freelance location photographer in 1982, shooting commercial and editorial assignments in Columbus, Ohio. He turned his attention to stock photography in 1990 when he signed a contract with FPG International. His work has appeared in ads for Microsoft, IBM, NEC, Huntington Banks, Wendy's International and Toledo Scale. His images have also been used by Time Magazine, Child Magazine, Kipplinger Books, Scholastic Publications and many others. He is the owner of The Stock Asylum, LLC.
Jeff Wignall is a photographer and writer and the author of numerous books on photography, including The Joy of Digital Photography, The Kodak Guide to Shooting Great Travel Pictures, Kodak's Most Basic Book of 35mm Photography, and Winning Pictures.
Peter Ensenberger has been director of photography for Arizona Highways Magazine for nearly two decades. He oversees the production of photography for all published products -- the magazine, books, calendars, cards, and all of the magazine's related products -- as well as the magazine's Web site. Corporate and editorial assignments make up the bulk of Peter's freelance work for Black Star, with an emphasis on outdoor, travel, and nature photography. He works in all camera formats and has produced photographs ranging from landscapes and wildlife to portraits and product photography.
Dennis Brack has more than 35 years experience in photojournalism, commercial, and advertising photography. His photographs have won awards from the White House News Photographers Association, the National Newspaper Photographers Association and the World Press Association. He is president of The White House News Photographers Association. For the past 16 years, Dennis has been one the five members on the Standing Committee of Press Photographers of the U.S. Senate.
Jim Pickerell began his career in 1963 as a freelance photojournalist in the Far East. His first major sale, a Life Magazine cover, was a stock photo of the overthrow of the Ngo Dinh Diem government in Saigon. In 1990, he began publishing Selling Stock, a bimonthly newsletter dealing with issues of interest to stock photographers and stock photo sellers, with particular focus on issues related to marketing stock images. Selling Stock is recognized worldwide as the leading source of in-depth analysis of the stock photo industry. As a result of his many years in the industry and his work with Selling Stock, Jim has an expert understanding of the stock industry, its standard practices and developing trends.
